Omega-3 fatty acids are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and potential cardiovascular benefits in both humans and animals. In pets, particularly dogs and cats suffering from heart disease, omega-3 supplementation can help reduce inflammation and support heart health by preventing abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia).

Recommended Dosage for Pets

For pets with heart failure, the recommended daily dosage is:

  • Dogs and Cats: 40 mg/kg of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + 25 mg/kg of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Sources of Omega-3 for Pets

While some commercial pet foods contain sufficient omega-3 (such as Royal Canin Early Cardiac Diet for Dogs), supplementation is often necessary. The best source of omega-3 fatty acids for pets is fish oil. However, some sources should be avoided:

  • Flaxseed Oil: Ineffective for providing omega-3 to dogs and cats.

  • Cod Liver Oil: Contains excessive vitamin A and D, which can lead to toxicity.

Precautions When Supplementing Omega-3

  • Fish oil may not be suitable for pets with sensitive gastrointestinal systems or those prone to excessive bleeding.

  • If a pet’s diet already contains high amounts of fish, fish meal, or fish oil, consult a veterinarian to adjust the omega-3 dosage accordingly.

  • Not all supplements provide adequate quality control. Trusted brands with independent testing should be used.

Recommended Omega-3 Products

  • For Small and Medium Dogs & Cats: CVS Fish Oil Concentrate Capsules (1000 mg with 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA per softgel) – 1 capsule per 10 lbs.

  • For Large Dogs: Swanson EFA's Super EPA (300 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA per softgel) – 1 capsule per 17 lbs.

  • Liquid Option: Vitamin Shoppe Omega-3 fish oil (800 mg EPA and 500 mg DHA per teaspoon) – 1 teaspoon per 44 lbs.

Conclusion

Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation can significantly improve heart health in pets with cardiovascular disease. However, pet owners should consult a veterinarian before starting supplementation to ensure the correct dosage and avoid potential side effects. With proper administration, omega-3s can be a valuable addition to a pet’s heart care regimen.
